Congratulations to Julia Esparza, Head of User Education and Outreach Services, who recently received an award for a paper presented at the Medical Library Association (MLA) 2018 Annual Meeting.  The paper, “Community Knowledge Assessment of HPV Vaccination in Males,” was awarded second place by the MLA Research Section.  The paper was co-written with students Grace Dodd, Derrick Murcia, and Jessica Sims; Dr. Gunjan Kahlon, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Dr. Meher Sindhoora, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Shreveport, Louisiana; Dr. Eric Thomas, Section Chief, Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, Shreveport, Louisiana; Dr. Afaf Abdulbaki, Clinical Pharmacist; and Dr. Lois Anderson - Director of Pharmacy, CHRISTUS Shreveport – Bossier Health System.

The Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) is the professional development and career recognition program of the Medical Library Association (MLA). Julie Esparza, Head of Education & Outreach, was recently approved for renewal at the highest AHIP level, Distinguished. Ms. Esparza holds the Stafford & Marianne Comegys Professorship in Medical Library Science, and is the President-Elect of the Medical Library Association. Two other Library faculty also have Academy credentialing at the Distinguished level, as recognition of their academic preparation, professional experience, and professional accomplishment: David Duggar, Head of the Liaison Program, and Will Olmstadt, Executive Director of the Library.

The Health Sciences Library will be celebrating National Ice Cream Day on Monday, July 16th starting at 3:00 PM. The first 120 people will receive an ice cream cup. Beat the summer heat and enjoy some ice cream in the Library on a Monday afternoon.

The Library will be closed Wednesday, July 4th, for the holiday. Normal hours will resume at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 5th. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday!




Congratulations to Duchein Stinson, Library student worker, who recently received the School of Allied Health Professions 2018 Dean’s Award.  This award recognizes students who promote the health sciences and the School before the public.  With its emphasis on service, the Dean’s Award represents the highest ideals of the School of Allied Health Professions.  Mr. Stinson, who graduated in Cardiopulmonary Science in May, recently passed the National Board of Respiratory Care credentialing exams and is now eligible for Registered Respiratory Therapist licensing.  





Betty Tucker, Assistant Director of Technical Services, retired from the health sciences library on June 30, 2018. Ms. Tucker began working at the Library in 1988, and she became Assistant Director in 2015.  
The Library staff honored Ms. Tucker with a dinner on Thursday, June 28. We appreciate her service to the Library and LSU Health, and we wish her all the best in the future!

Congratulations to Sheryll Anderson, Library Specialist in User Access Services, who recently received an award from the Frank & Margaret McEntee Travel Fellowship Fund.  This award, presented by the LSU School of Library & Information Science, provides funding to attend the American Library Association Annual Conference.  This year’s conference will be held June 21-26 in New Orleans.  





Will Olmstadt was appointed Executive Director of the Library on June 1, 2018. He had been the interim director since February 2017, and the associate director since 2013. Prior to coming to LSU Health Shreveport, he worked for several other academic health sciences libraries, including those at Washington University in St. Louis, Texas A&M University, and UT Southwestern Medical Center.





The Library’s AccessMedicine and AccessSurgery databases, as well as the e-books that our users access via these platforms, will be unavailable from 7:00 pm on Saturday, June 2, until 1:00 am on Sunday, June 3rd.  This is so that the publisher may conduct server maintenance.  We apologize for any inconvenience.
